MEDIA RELEASE: Sept 13th, 2021
COVID LOCKDOWN NO JOKE FOR THE HOME OF LIVE COMEDY
The Classic launches a campaign to reach its Quarter Century.
NZ’s home of live comedy, The Classic in Auckland, was counting down to a, much anticipated, launch of its 25th year on Queen St when the covid lockdown forced its closure at Level 4.
And, with the shifting covid protocols, the chances of reaching the ‘next level’ now look even more problematic.
But the optimism remains that the popular venue will be able to launch its 25th year at some stage during October. In the meantime, to bridge the gap and help cover unavoidable overheads, The Classic is launching a fundraising campaign where donations, now, can be converted in to a ‘ticket to laugh’, later, during the 25th Anniversary Year – Oct 2021 to Oct 2022.
“We have played a long game, 25 years, up until now and we are looking forward to giving our many supporters a chance to invest in a very important ‘Year of It’ at The Classic” says founding director, Scott Blanks. “But, while we managed to satisfy all the health and safety requirements at Level 2 in 2020, it would appear that we may have to wait for Level 1 in 2021 because of capacity limits, distancing and mask protocols”.
“We adopted the approach after the first lockdown that our regular programme of live comedy, up to 5 nights a week, was a moveable feast that could absorb Level changes and be restarted or expanded at short notice. This was supported by both performers and audiences alike so we will continue this as the basis of our 25th Year celebrations. But in the mean-time we need to ensure that we can actually reach an October starting date.”
Donators can ‘save a seat’ on Eventfinda.co.nz or via the link on comedy.co.nz.
